Heading into the World Cup, Edouard Mendy, a star goalkeeper for Chelsea, is unsure of his future. He is thinking about leaving because he fears his opportunities in the first team will be limited.

Since his 2020 arrival at Stamford Bridge in a deal worth £22m from Rennes, the shot-stopper has been a huge success.

However, with Thomas Tuchel’s dismissal and the appointment of current head coach Graham Potter, the goalkeeper’s status as the Blues’ No. 1 has been called into question.

In the beginning of Potter’s tenure, Kepa Arrizabalaga was Chelsea’s first-choice goalkeeper while Mendy was sidelined with a knee injury.

Due to Arrizabalaga’s foot injury, Mendy, a Senegalese international, has started Chelsea’s last four games, three of which the team has lost.

Thoughts that Mendy’s tenure as the undisputed Chelsea first-choice goalkeeper is coming to an end have not been allayed by his recent run of games.

The goalkeeper is still optimistic that he can persuade Potter that he deserves to reclaim his starting role, but there are concerns that the Blues manager has already decided that Arrizabalaga, should he be fit, will start as first-choice when the Premier League resumes next month.

Sportsmail is aware that Potter is considering making a move to acquire Brighton’s goalkeeper Robert Sanchez.

In Qatar, where some strong performances are likely to alert potential suitors, Mendy is anticipated to be Senegal’s first-choice goalkeeper.

There’s not much chance that Chelsea will approve a Mendy sale in January.

But given that he enters the final two years of his contract at the end of the season, a choice about his future is probably going to be made by the summer.

Mendy and the club have discussed a contract extension, but no agreement has been reached. The 30-year-old’s uncertain position in Potter’s plans makes it unlikely that things will move more quickly.

Chelsea is expected to get millioпs from FIFA during the World Cup to satisfy Graham Potter’s demand

Chelsea are set to receive a bonus for allowing players to compete in the World Cup but could miss out on extra funds due to injuries to key players.

FIFA is paying out to all the clubs that have allowed their players to travel to Qatar for the 2022 tournament. Teams will receive compensation for the players’ missed time with their clubs as the break divides the season into two for the first time.

Prior to the competition, both the domestic and international seasons were already finished, and Chelsea won’t play again until December 27 after being eliminated from the Carabao Cup. Graham Potter will only have a small number of squad members left over for the upcoming month as a result.

Reece James, Ben Chilwell, and N’Golo Kante were all likely candidates had they not been injured, but only twelve players were actually called up. If Kepa Arrizabalaga and Wesley Fofana had not also sustained injuries in the weeks preceding selection, they might have been in the running for positions.

Chelsea will also suffer financial consequences from these injuries because the FIFA program pays out £8,500 per player, per day. In other words, every club that has players will get at least £161,500 throughout the group stages. Chelsea, with 12 players involved, will get £1.93m.

However, given that it is anticipated that players from England, Brazil, and Spain will advance further in the competition, this number could rise. For instance, should England advance to the final and Gareth Southgate’s 26-man squad included Mason Mount, Raheem Sterling, and Conor Gallagher, Chelsea would earn £714,000 from just those three players.

The omission of Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Trevoh Chalobah, whose inclusion in a successful England run to the final would increase that bonus to £1.19m, may have left some disappointed. Chelsea may also be losing out on an additional £953,000 due to injured players for England and France.

The best wager for the current group is on Senegal and England both making it to the championship game. As a result, five players—including Kalidou Koulibaly and Edouard Mendy—would receive the maximum bonus for the African Cup of Nations champions. As a result, Chelsea would make £1.19 million from those players in addition to the minimum of £1.13m from the group stage participants.

Their best possible outcome would be a total of £2.34m. This would slightly help Todd Boehly by making up for the money Chelsea spent on bringing in Potter’s backroom staff from Brighton.
