Blues writer Daniel Childs outlines his preferred January transfer strategy at Stamford Bridge.
Few of us can confidently predict what will and will not work for Chelsea in the upcoming transfer window.
By all logic, Romelu Lukaku should have been the clinical goalscorer Thomas Tuchel required, but he wasn’t. Over £250 million was spent by the new ownership the previous summer, and even the most cynical supporters have labeled it a complete waste of time.
While I cannot share the same pessimistic view of Chelsea’s new additions, their struggles on the field lead us down a path of complete uncertainty about what can be done next.
These are not bad players, but the collateral damage of frequent head coach changes and varying playing styles has resulted in a muddled concept. Chelsea has young players who are still developing, average players who are either not good enough or want to play somewhere else, and ageing names who should have been sold by now.
That combination is not pleasant. It has created an environment that has not been conducive to a perfect start to the season, so all eyes are on January and what Todd Boehly can do to solve the ongoing crisis and save a season on the verge of collapse.
In January, I will be concentrating on two areas. They are the major red alert zones that have been sounding the alarm for some time. You don’t ignore that klaxon, even if you’re tempted by flashy celebrities: don’t do it. Cristiano isn’t worth it, Todd! Two positions that require attention are central midfield and cover for Reece James on the right side of Chelsea’s defense.
For so long, midfield has been the oddly overlooked problem that it has become its own parody. It is astounding that, despite the mιllions of dollars spent since 2019, so little has gone towards such a critical area; one that I would ɑrgue is fairly defining in modern football.
Several Chelsea coaches have struggled to find a solution to a balance problem due to limited options. You can’t rely on N’Golo Kante’s fitness anymore; doing so is a bad strategy. Jorginho has already passed his peak at the club, which was in 2021, and now he appears sluggish and exhausted. Jorginho’s lack of mobility and physicality has always been a major issue, which Thomas Tuchel wisely addressed for some time by devising a system to protect him.Chelsea will have to wait for Declan Rice, who is well worth the wait. However, Chelsea cannot afford to let another window pass without action. First and foremost, make a decision on Kante and Jorginho. Are you going to offer them new contracts or not? Personally, I would not vote in either case.
For the reasons stated above, this is a bad situation that the previous owner failed to correct, and Boehly must be decisive in this case. Sacrificing Kante, one of the club’s greatest-ever signings for £32 million in 2016, is a huge rιѕĸ given his insɑne talent. However, a redesign is required.
I’d rather go after Moises Caicedo from Brighton than Leandro Trossard. Caicedo would provide Potter with a high-energy presence in the middle of the park, giving the area much-needed legs.Edson Alvarez is an Ajax alternative, albeit with a slower and more set profile in a deeper area similar to Nemanja Matic. Alvarez’s main concern is how he will adjust to a faster league after impressing in the Eredivisie. The midfielder’s poor performances for Ajax in the Champions League did not help his case, but he is clearly open to a move to Chelsea.
In the other area, I’m looking at Bayer Leverkusen’s Jeremie Frimpong. Having seen a lot of Leverkusen this season, once in person, owing primarily to Callum Hudson-Odoi joining the Bundesliga club on loan, it is impossible to overlook Frimpong’s potential.
The Dutch right-back, who is still only 21, offers a raw blend of speed and trickery, showing little feɑr when taking on his opposing fullback. His skill set naturally lends itself to being a wingback rather than a fullback. That versatility would be beneficial to Potter, but it’s Frimpong’s 1v1 ability that interests me the most, as it’s a trait Chelsea has lacked in wide areas since the departure of Eden Hazard.
