Chelsea’s future Ballon d’or sends Potter powerful message after England’s match against Iran

For England's 6-2 World Cup victory, Mason Mount started in a midfield three with Jude Bellingham and Declan Rice.

With Chelsea forward Raheem Sterling among the goal scorers, England easily defeated Iran 6-2 to start their 2022 World Cup campaign. Marcus Rashford, Jack Grealish, Jude Bellingham, Bukayo Saka (twice), and Bukayo Saka were the other members of Gareth Southgate’s team to score goals.

England was in complete control of the match despite conceding twice to Iran, who are currently ranked 20th in the FIFA World Rankings. After an empty first half hour, England scored three goals in the span of 11 first-half minutes.

Concerns about Southgate taking a conservative approach were quickly allayed as the Three Lions relentlessly sought forward passes. Mason Mount and Bellingham found small openings in Iran’s half that allowed England’s wide players to move higher up the field and assume attacking positions.

The majority of Mount’s playing time has been spent in Chelsea’s front three, but after his performance in a slightly deeper position, he might have convinced Graham Potter that he could play in a free-roaming attacking midfield position.

Mount is the most frequently fouled player in the first half, with four fouls, but when receiving the ball in a deeper position, he can use his agility and quick feet to avoid challenges from the opposition or frequently be stopped from advancing forward illegally.

The 23-year-old also prevailed in every one of his first-half duels and tackles, demonstrating that he isn’t just there to have an impact on the game offensively but also defensively, with many of those recoveries occurring in Iran’s half and allowing the Three Lions to advance.

Being paired with Dortmund midfielder and potential Chelsea target Bellingham was crucial to Mount’s success because of the teenager’s work ethic and positional awareness, which allowed Mount to be the furthest forward midfielder and pick up crucial positions between the lines.

After watching Mount’s performance in a trio, Blues manager could be tempted to use a midfield three, where Mateo Kovacic could undoubtedly fill the Bellingham role. Potter and Tuchel were both avid users of a back five with two midfielders.

While N’golo Kante would be the ideal choice for the base of the midfield, Jorginho might be required to protect the defense in N’golo Kante’s absence due to injury. Although the Italian doesn’t offer the same level of security as Rice, Potter may find the chance to play Mount in what appears to be his best position to be worth the risk.

After an “immense” World Cup USA moment, Christian Pulisic sends Graham Potter a crystal-clear message for Chelsea

World Cup news: Timothy Weah’s game-opening goal for the United States against Wales was made possible in large part by Christian Pulisic, who demonstrated his talent for his country.

At the World Cup on Monday, Christian Pulisic was a major contributor to the USA’s first goal against Wales. After latching onto a superb Pulisic pass, Timothy Weah gave Gregg Berhalter’s team the lead.

Pulisic was given time and space to turn and attack the Wales back line for a significant portion of the game, and on another occasion of that movement, he set up Weah for the game’s first goal. Wales had been playing second fiddle for much of the contest.

After gaining control just inside the Welsh, Pulisic galloped past an out-of-position Joe Rodon before perfectly spotting the run of Weah, who displayed great composure to finish beyond on Wayne Hennessey.

Weah’s finish was excellent, but Pulisic’s contribution to the goal was the topic of conversation for everyone. This is how Twitter reacted:
